This hands-on workshop introduces instructors to the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method and explores how it can be applied in higher education. LSP is a facilitated, hands-on didactic approach that uses Lego bricks to support thinking, dialogue, and reflection through building abstract models. Participants will explore how model-building can make invisible ideas visible, clarify complex concepts, and surface diverse perspectives. We will consider how LSP can support class discussions, course design, and student understanding, for example by “building” learning experiences or representing key themes of a course. Through guided individual and collaborative exercises, participants will experiment with LSP as a reflective teaching tool and consider how it might be adapted to their own teaching contexts.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe how the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method can be used in different teaching situations
- Construct Lego models to represent abstract ideas related to learning, teaching, or course design
- Facilitate discussions among students or colleagues using LSP as a structured dialogue tool
- Apply LSP techniques in their own courses to support dialogue and reflective learning
Methods
The workshop combines practical experience with reflection on how LSP can enrich dialogue and teaching practice, from within individual courses to interdisciplinary exchange. The session is suitable for educators from all disciplines; no prior experience with LSP is required. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a foundation for integrating LSP into their courses or teaching development processes.
Activities and Methods: Input and reflective discussion on LSP implementation in higher education settings; applying the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method.
